Abstract:

Memoirs of a Jew who was born in 1935 in Hungary. Pp. 9-55 deal with the Holocaust period. The family went to live in Amsterdam in the 1930s, and during 1940-43 managed to avoid deportation time and again. In 1943 the Hungarian government allowed those Jews living abroad who carried Hungarian passports to return to Hungary; the family joined a transport of ca. 200 Jews who did so. With the Nazi occupation they were interned in a "Jewish house" in Budapest. Her father was inducted into the Hungarian labor service and sent to Bor in Serbia. In 1944, with the random murders of Jews carried out by members of the Arrow Cross, Kati's mother decided they would leave the "Jewish house" and go into hiding in an abandoned apartment. Kati forgot to take her doll's cradle, hence the title of the book. Her father was inducted into the Hungarian labor service and sent to Bor in Serbia. After the war, her father returned and they all went back to Holland. David now lives in Geneva.
