Abstract:
Relates the life story of Alfred Mandelbaum, as told to Schiel in a series of interviews. Mandelbaum was born in 1935 to a Jewish father and a German mother in Stralsund. His father was maltreated by the SA after a campaign of agitation against Jews in mixed marriages. The family fled to Poznań and, after the German invasion, to Warsaw. Mandelbaum was interned in the ghetto with his father, while his mother worked for the Polish underground on the "Aryan side". She maintained contact with her husband and son, providing them with food and medications. On 21 July 1942, before the deportations began, she managed to smuggle her son out of the ghetto; they lived in various places until the end of the war. Mandelbaum's father escaped later and hid in Warsaw until the liberation. In 1948 the family emigrated to Israel; he now lives in Australia.
