Abstract:

In preparation for World War II, Washington D.C. residents witnessed the local population nearly double, as female workforce descended into the city, while the male population was sent into combat in Europe and the Pacific. Washingtonians planted victory gardens, ran scrap drives, and suffered the effects of severe rationing, while military personnel manned antiaircraft batteries around the city. New government agencies were created and old ones expanded. Washingtonians also witnessed the construction of the largest office building in the world-- the Pentagon --which was completed roughly in 16 months. Photographs chronicle these stages of war preparation in addition to VE and VJ parades.
