With text kept to a minimum, and only covering the fundamentals of each bird presented, Waterfowl Studies is all about the photographs. As seen through the artist’s eye, they are some of the most useful ever assembled for carvers, painters, and naturalists alike. Burk does a sensational job of capturing every aspect of his subjects, giving the clearest possible view, not just of form and function, but of texture, attitude, and posture, both on and off the water.
In striving for realism, it is never enough that a carving be technically correct, if it fails to come alive. Burk, a master carver of exceptional ability, understands this very well. His photographs could almost serve as templates. Rendered in wood, each is potential blue ribbon material.
Ducks, geese, and swans are all represented in the dozens and dozens of wonderful pictures. The Canada goose, in particular, is covered in great detail, and Burk really does justice to the beautiful layering and the subtle variations of the feathers, with special emphasis on the wings and their position.
Almost all the photos are black and white, but there are also several pages in color. A handful of drawings, including an entire page of swan and goose bills, add even more value to an already essential volume.
Waterfowl Studies hovers near the top of the best books in its field, and is an absolute “must” for both artists and naturalists. This is one book you can’t be without.
