Abstract:

Surveys theories currently adopted by German right-wing and revisionist historians to explain away or relativize German guilt for the Second World War and the Holocaust. Asserts that in ignoring these theories, demonstrating the guilt of "ordinary Germans" and ascribing it to their antisemitism, Goldhagen seems to pull the ground out from under the feet of these historians and their effort to re-legitimize German nationalism and hegemony in Europe. He also antagonizes German mainstream historians, such as Mommsen, by opposing their structuralist explanation of the Holocaust. Almost all the reviews of Goldhagen's book in the German press attacked him as a "vengeful" Jew, or as a racist himself in his supposed allegation of collective guilt. Although it is possible to criticize Goldhagen on many points, especially the absence of comparisons in his analysis, German historians condemn him not for this, but for calling into question the possibility of "drawing a line under the past" and allowing Germans again to take pride in their nation. Historiography is a weapon in current German politics.
