Can a person really understand what it's like to be a bat? Of course not. He can only imagine what it might feel like. However, the specific sensations and experiences of bats have such a different character that we basically remain hidden. In the end, Nagel shows his limits to humans in his ability to recognize and empathize. Ulrich Diehl explains in an afterword the special meaning and exciting impact story of the text.
