Abstract:

Abstract: In recent years, Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) penetration has been declining in the United States. Previous research has identified several reasons for this decline despite PD being a viable home therapy option for people with end stage renal disease (ESRD). The purpose of this project is to identify key variables that affect Peritoneal Dialysis growth. A tool was developed to assess 13 variables to identify if any of those variables had an impact in PD program growth. The assessments were completed on a sample of 138 PD programs of a large dialysis provider in the United States. The sample was determined based on qualitative and quantitative criteria including operating income, local market growth potential, and program infrastructure. Nurse training, nurse inclusion and participation in quality improvement meetings, and addressing patients laboratory results in a timely manner were correlated with PD program growth.
