Abstract:
"1944, Hungary. I can picture the Hungarian gendarmes coming up my street as if it happened yesterday. They came to our house at 10 o'clock in the morning. It was a Saturday. They lined us up and said we were all going to the station to get on a train to a camp where we would be doing labor related to the war effort, and that it was going to be better for us. They waid that anybody who was too old to walk could ride in it. My grandfather was 86, and he couldnt move very well. He looked at the wagon and shook his head. He knoew what it meant. Why did it have to come to this, he said. Why can't I just die at home?"--Cover.
