Abstract:

Correspondence, diaries, travel journals, notebooks, writings, sermons, genealogical material on the Clark and Griffis families, memorabilia, photos, scrapbooks, and other papers. Griffis's diaries (31 v., 1859-1927), supplemented by notebooks, chronicle his military service in the Civil War, attendance at Rutgers College (1865-1869), teaching in Japan (1870-1874), pastoral work in a Reformed church in Schenectady, N.Y., and Congregational churches in Boston, Mass., and Ithaca, N.Y. (1877-1903), and his later life as full-time lecturer and writer, including frequent trips to Europe and Great Britain. Includes diaries (1873-1876) of Griffis's first wife, Katharine Lyra (Stanton) Griffis (1856-1898) and her account book (1879-1884); diary (1900-1927) of his second wife, Sarah Frances (King) Griffis (1868-1959); diary (1858-1913) of his sister, Margaret Quandril Clark Griffis (1838-1913); Civil War journal (1861-1863), journal of a voyage to Cuba (1859-1860), and nautical reminiscences, 1856-1865 (written 1901) of Montgomery Patterson Griffis (1840-1901); diary and account book of Samuel Robbins Brown, containing entries relating to a trip (1869) to Japan from Connecticut; correspondence of Sarah Frances King Griffis, Margaret Clark Griffis, Montgomery Patterson Griffis, and Tasuku Harada; and material relating to Japanese history and art, China, and Korea.
