Abstract:

Three notes to Griffis from Moses Coit Tyler concerning a review of Tyler's recently published book; one note from Professor Charles H. Hull acknowledging a note of congratulation; and photocopy of a certificate from the DeWitt Historical Society of Tompkins County, signed by Griffis, to the Province of Friesland. Also, lecture notes, clippings, and correspondence on religions of Japan and China, circa 1883-1897, together with notes on Japanese music and modern Japan. Religions discussed include shamanism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Christianity. Also includes letter to the Rev. Thomas W. Carter, in which Griffis agrees to lecture on the Russo-Japanese War, written on the back of printed tributes from Ithaca ministers and laymen on Griffis' retirement; printed chronology of events in Griffis' life relating to Japan and the Japanese; and nine small broadsides announcing lectures by Griffis on China, Korea, and Japan.

Also includes 2 letters to Griffis found in the attic of 111 Osmun Place in Ithaca, NY. One letter refers to a question of whether the site of the Ithaca Savings Bank was the former home of Ezra Cornell - it was actually the site of the residence of Ezra's son A.B. Cornell. Another letter refers to a tablet honoring Cornell to be cast by Sibley College.
