Abstract:

In 1978, with the help of a grant from the Vermont Historical Society, the Jericho Historical Society was able to copy 130 of Bentley's glass slides as black and white 35mm slides as well as archival prints. Although Bentley's talents as a photographer are clear in his well-known photomicrographs of snowflakes, this collection demonstrates that his skills were more wide ranging. It includes prints of vermont landscapes, family members, the Bentley homestead in Jericho and of course, photomicrographs of frost, ice crystals and other natural subjects. The photos range in date from the late 19th century to the 1920s. Some of the photos within the collection were published in his book, "Snow Crystals." Each print is numbered on the back which can be referenced using the included index created by the Jericho Historical Society. Other documentation within the collection includes technical aspects about how the prints were made.
