Knowledge of the World - Wikipedia Open Content is on the advance. Combined with collaborative work new extraordinary projects are arising. One of the most prominent is Wikipedia - an international project to create a free encyclopaedia in multiple languages. Using wiki techniques thousands of volunteers are collaboratively editing content with amazing success. The article gives an overview of Wikipedia's history, growth, systems and its structure. The article is based on an article published in december 2004 in the journal "Information Wissenschaft und Praxis."
