Abstract:

Usery, as a 5-year-old and then as Secretary of Labor, describes meeting Georgia United States Congressman Carl Vinson, head of the Armed Forces Committee. As a child, Usery garnered enjoyment from watching court cases, and he describes Georgia governors' campaigns, particularly that of Eugene Talmadge, plus county election contests. Usery describes people's modes of transportation in the context of social changes taking place between his childhood and his entry into military service. Specifically, Usery describes changes in race relations and women's roles.
