Abstract:

In 1799 the Portuguese Superintendent of Police arrested a very suspicious woman named Jeanne d'Entremeuse. She claimed to be a French widow who had fled the French Revolution. She had traveled the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and had conducted dubious commercial activities between Portuguese, French and Spanish America. Her name was even recorded in a privateer's correspondence. Given all these actions, the Superintendent wondered if she was not actually a man who had disguised himself, knowing that a woman would have easier access to the colonies. Based on this case study this lecture focuses on assumptions about and the realities of women at the time of the French Revolution. How did men perceive women? What were the official and unofficial restrictions on women? And how was Jeanne d'Entremeuse able to save herself in this situation?
