Abstract:

Youth: Marlow, discusses his first voyage in the east as second mate at the age of twenty. The ships he sails on encounter numerous problems including breaking up in a storm, fire, and sailing a damaged vessel but he retains his youthful optimism throughout each ordeal.

Heart of darkness: The narrator, Marlowe, journeys on business deep into the heart of Africa. There he encounters Kurtz, an idealist apparently crazed and depraved by his power over the natives, and the meeting prompts Marlowe to reflect on the darkness at the heart of all men.

End of the Tether: An aging and nearly broke sea captain, Henry Whalley, must cope with jealous shipmates who try to plot his downfall. Meanwhile he continually tries to send money to his daughter to help her support her invalid husband.
