Abstract:

Manobla was born in England; she is the granddaughter of a Jewish immigrant from Žagarė, Lithuania, and has been living in Israel since 1960. In 1995 she traveled to Žagarė, and visited Lithuania and Latvia several times more in the following years. Describes, inter alia, the mass murder of 2,236 Jews in Žagarė in October 1941. Dwells on the story of the rescue of two Jewish women in 1943 by Edvardas and Terese Levinskas, from Žagarė. The rescuers were members of a group of Lithuanian Tolstoyans, led by Juozas Petrulis from the nearby city of Šiauliai, which also rescued other Jews. In the 1990s-2000s Manobla worked for reconciliation between Jews and Lithuanians.
