Abstract:

Describes the history of the small Jewish community in Seligenstadt (near Frankfurt) from the Middle Ages until the Holocaust. The first measures of emancipation took place in the 1770s-80s. Describes social and communal life during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ch. 11 (p. 135-153) surveys the persecutions after 1933, the destruction of the synagogue, and the fate of the local Jews during the Holocaust. Includes photographs and facsimiles of documents.
