Abstract:
Describes the history of the small Jewish community in Seligenstadt (near Frankfurt) from the Middle Ages until the Holocaust. Mentions the massacres of the Jews during the Black Death in 1348 after allegations that they had poisoned wells, the "Judenordnung" of 1741 which imposed restrictions on Jews, the "Schutzjuden" (protected Jews) who had to show a certain minimum of possessions and be proficient in German. The first measures of emancipation took place in the 1770s-80s. Describes social and communal life during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ch. 11 (p. 135-153) surveys the persecutions after 1933, the destruction of the synagogue, and the fate of the local Jews during the Holocaust. Includes photographs and facsimiles of documents.
