Abstract:

Examines various aspects of Jewish life in Gdańsk and its surroundings against the background of political events in this period. The first antisemitic parties were founded at the beginning of the 1920s, but an important change in policy toward the Jewish population began in 1930 when Albert Forster became head of the local NSDAP, which then began to infiltrate all spheres of public life. Many Jews lost their jobs, especially in the fields of administration and culture. In 1937 the local NSDAP decided at its congress to open an anti-Jewish front. The first pogroms took place in October 1937. Describes the Aryanization of businesses, the expropriation of Jewish assets, the liquidation of Jewish institutions, the demolition of the Great Synagogue, etc. Discusses the Jewish reactions to these events: the founding of self-defense organizations and appeals addressed to the Senate and the League of Nations. In November 1939 there were about 1,500 Jews in Gdańsk as opposed to the more than 7,000 living there in 1923; most of the Jews had left the city before the war because of the persecutions. The last chapter (pp. 258-289) deals with the fate of the Jews during the Holocaust.
