"A startling reevaluation of Lady Byron's marriage and the untold story of her complex life as a single mother and progressive force. Far from a victim or an obstacle to Lord Byron's work, Lady Byron was a rebel against the fashionable snobbery of her class, founding the first Infants School and Co-Operative School in England. A poet and a talented mathematician, Lady Byron supported the education of her precocious daughter, Ada Lovelace, now recognized as a pioneer of computer science, and she saved from death her 'adoptive daughter, ' Medora Leigh, the child of Lord Byron's incestuous affair with his sister. Lady Byron was adored by the younger abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe and by many notable friends. Yet her complex relationships with her family, including the sister Byron loved, runs like a live wire through this skillfully told and groundbreaking biography of a remarkable woman who made a life for herself and became a leading light in her century"--Provided by publisher

First English Edition, published the same year as the American edition. Stowe had met Lady Byron in London in 1857, and decided she "was the most noble-hearted woman who had ever lived." Lady Byron took her into her confidence and divulged that of all her late husband's sins, the one she could not forgive was that he had been guilty of incest with his own sister. Eleven years later, after Lady Byron's death, one of Byron's mistresses published memoirs that spoke disparagingly of Lady Byron; Stowe decided that it was her Christian duty to set the record straight, and did so first with an article in the Atlantic Monthly and then with this book. Reaction was tumultuous, and "ultimately Mrs. Stowe appears to have realized that she made the worst mistake of her professional life when she publicized Lady Byron's confidences" [Gerson]. The English edition contains a "Note of the Publishers," which did not appear in the American edition
