Procurement of works by World Bank( file )
27 editions published between 1985 and 2002 in English and held by 1,658 libraries worldwide
The Standard Prequalification Document (SPD) has been prepared for use by the Bank's Borrowers and their implementing agencies in the procurement of works primarily through International Competitive Bidding (ICB), but the principles may also be applied if prequalification is needed under National Competitive Bidding (NCB). When ICB is the appropriate method for procurement, the use of the Bank's Standard Bidding Documents (SBDs) is mandatory. For large works or complex works, prequalification is usually necessary, and would be mandated in the Loan/Credit Agreement. Accordingly, the Bank's SBD for the Procurement of Works has been prepared on the basis that prequalification, in accordance with this document, will have taken place prior to bidding. The Bank has also issued an SBD for smaller contracts, for which prequalification is optional; if, however, prequalification is required, it should be carried out in accordance with this document. Annex A of this document explains the reasons for following this procedure, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of prequalification. Annex B explains the rationale for certain clauses, and provides guidances to executing agencies and their consultants in preparing a particular prequalification questionnaire and evaluating the submissions of applicants
Large mines and the community : socioeconomic and environmental effects in Latin America, Canada, and Spain by Gary McMahon( file )
18 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 1,581 libraries worldwide
"For centuries, communities have been founded or shaped based upon their access to natural resources and today, in our globalizing world, major natural resource developments are spreading to more remote areas. Mining operations are a good example: they have a profound impact on local communities and are often the first industry in a remote region. However, whereas an enormous amount has been written about the macroeconomic effects of the mining industry, there has been practically no in-depth analysis of the comprehensive effects of large mines on their host communities, especially in developing countries." "In this book, researchers from Bolivia, Chile, and Peru present and analyze the environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic effects of large mining operations in their respective countries, as well as the processes that led to the observed effects. The book also presents a case study of the longest continually operating mine in the world, the Almaden mercury mine in Spain, and an overview of the experience of mining communities in Canada, one of the most important mining countries of the 20th century. A synthesis chapter draws together recommendations for best practice, intended to provide guidance to communities, companies, and governments for future and ongoing mining and other natural resource developments." "Interested readers will include individuals involved in local community development (including those in nongovernmental, bilateral, and multilateral agencies), mining company officials, staff of government mining and development agencies, and academics and researchers in economic, social, environmental, and natural resource issues."--Jacket
Disease control priorities in developing countries by World Bank( file )
29 editions published between 1993 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 1,562 libraries worldwide
Between 1950 and 1990, life expectancy in developing countries increased from forty to sixty-three years with a concomitant rise in the incidence of the noncommunicable diseases of adults and the elderly. Yet there remains a huge unfinished agenda for dealing with undernutrition and the communicable childhood diseases. These developments have intensified the need for better information on the effectiveness and cost of health interventions. To assist countries to define essential health service packages, this book provides information on disease control interventions for the commonest diseases and injuries in developing countries. The decision was made to go ahead for two reasons. First, because the combined insights of economists, epidemiologists, and clinicians could give valuable guidance in the difficult choices facingdecisionmakers in developing countries, aid agencies, and the World Bank. Second because, for the most part, other reviews did not systematically assess the cost-effectiveness of available interventions

Globalization and its relation to poverty reduction and development is not well understood. The book identifies the ways in which globalization can overcome poverty or make it worse. The book defines the big historical trends, identifies main global flows?trade, finance, aid, migration, and ideas?and examines how each can contribute to undermine economic development. By considering what helps and what does not, the book presents policy recommendations to make globalization more effective as a vehicle for shared growth and prosperity. It will be of interest to students, researchers and anyone i
Globalization, growth, and poverty : building an inclusive world economy by Paul Collier( file )
17 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in 3 languages and held by 1,535 libraries worldwide
Globalization is a powerful force for poverty reduction as societies and economies around the world are becoming more integrated. Although this international integration presents tremendous opportunities for developing countries, it also has raised concerns about rising inequality, shifting power, and cultural uniformity. This report assesses the impact of globalization and addresses the ensuing anxieties. It proposes an agenda for action aimed at mitigating the risks that globalization potentially generates, while maximizing the opportunities for the poor.--Publisher description
