An economic history of West Africa by Anthony G Hopkins( Book )
63 editions published between 1900 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,063 libraries worldwide
This book is the first work to offer a comprehensive account of the economic history of the huge area conventionally known as West Africa, including the former French territories as well as those colonised by the British. Ranging from prehistoric times to independence, the book presents an argument, based on the concept of the market, that criticises many conventional beliefs about econmic backwardness and advances an alternative set of explanations which takes into account, and contributes to, the latest studies in the fields of history, economics, anthropology and geography

British imperialism : crisis and deconstruction, 1914-1990 by Peter J Cain( Book )
24 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 729 libraries worldwide
"The system even survived World War II, though Britain was now dependent on the United States. The sterling area played an important part in Britain's postwar recovery, and the empire was rallied to the cause of reconstruction. When the empire did begin to fall apart, it was not simply because it could no longer be controlled but also because it had served its purpose. Even as it sank, the City had found a new role, though an uncertain one, in a new financial world order functioning on a scale far greater than that encompassed by nation states or empires."--BOOK JACKET
British imperialism, 1688-2000 by P. J Cain( Book )
37 editions published between 1993 and 2016 in English and Italian and held by 708 libraries worldwide
"The milestone in the understanding of British history and imperialism, this important book radically reinterprets the course of modern economic development and the causes of overseas expansion during the past three centuries. Employing their concept of gentlemanly capitalism, the authors draw imperial and domestic British history together to show how the shape of the nation and its economy depended on international and imperial ties, and how these ties were undone to produce the postcolonial world of today."
American empire : a global history by Antony G Hopkins( Book )
11 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 604 libraries worldwide
A new history of the United States that turns American exceptionalism on its head. American Empire is a panoramic work of scholarship that presents a bold new global perspective on the history of the United States. Drawing on his expertise in economic history and the imperial histories of Britain and Europe, A.G. Hopkins takes readers from the colonial era to today to show how, far from diverging, the United States and Western Europe followed similar trajectories throughout this long period, and how America's dependency on Britain and Europe extended much later into the nineteenth century than previously understood. In a sweeping narrative spanning three centuries, Hopkins describes how the revolt of the mainland colonies was the product of a crisis that afflicted the imperial states of Europe generally, and how the history of the American republic between 1783 and 1865 was a response not to the termination of British influence but to its continued expansion. He traces how the creation of a U.S. industrial nation-state after the Civil War paralleled developments in Western Europe, fostered similar destabilizing influences, and found an outlet in imperialism through the acquisition of an insular empire in the Caribbean and Pacific. The period of colonial rule that followed reflected the history of the European empires in its ideological justifications, economic relations, and administrative principles. After 1945, a profound shift in the character of globalization brought the age of the great territorial empires to an end

Africa, empire and globalization : essays in honor of A.G. Hopkins ( Book )
4 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 104 libraries worldwide
"Africa, empire and globalization is a set of original essays in honor of the distinguished historian, Professor A. G. Hopkins, whose career of over fifty years covers three main areas that are global in reach, but connect to ideas that are generated in such major cities as Lagos and London. The volume celebrates the key principles that have emerged from the cumulative body of Hopkins's work: searching for originality; extending the frontier of knowledge through new data and interpretations; questioning received assumptions and wisdom; promoting conversations between multiple, often divergent, sets of ideas from different disciplines; presenting ideas such that those within and outside of the academy can benefit; and applying theories drawn from various disciplines to organize the evidence and to present it in digestible form. The first section covers Africa, with essays on the economic history of Lagos and West Africa, the connections between economic change and imperialism, and the role of Africa in the world economy, including the trans-Saharan, trans-Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean World. The role of Africans in creating wealth and responding to new economic opportunities receives prominent attention in some chapters. In the second section, new topics on imperialism are explored, such as the British expansion to India, the role of trade in the Gambia, and the overall impact of the empire. Hopkins' idea of "gentlemanly capitalism" generates considerable debate in various chapters, and is also applied to various contexts and places. The current issues around the theme of globalization are developed in the third section in terms of the relevance of the concept, the contributions that historians can make to the subject, the arguments for and against, and its impact on capitalism and democracy. From peace to war, from economic prosperity to economic decline, from the use of power to nationalist resurgence, the section looks at the dominant concerns of our time."--Publisher description
