The hypocrites by Lois Weber( visu )
10 editions published between 1915 and 2008 in English and No Linguistic Content and held by 188 libraries worldwide
Hypocrites: Follows parallel stories of an early Christian ascetic and a modern minister. Gabriel is a medieval monk who devotes himself to completing a statue of "Truth," only to be murdered by a mob when his work turns out to be an image of a naked woman. The contemporary Gabriel is pastor of a large urban congregation for whom religion is a matter of appearances, not beliefs. The hypocrisy of the congregation is exposed by a series of vignettes in which the Naked Truth is portrayed by a naked woman, revealing their appetites for money, sex and power

2 editions published in 2018 in No Linguistic Content and held by 148 libraries worldwide
In the early decades of cinema, some of the most innovative and celebrated filmmakers in America were women. Alice Guy-Blaché helped establish the basics of cinematic language, while others boldly continued its development: slapstick queen Mabel Normand (who taught Charlie Chaplin the craft of directing), action star Grace Cunard, and LGBTQ icon Alla Nazimova. Unafraid of controversy, filmmakers such as Lois Weber and Dorothy Davenport Reid tackled explosive issues such as birth control, abortion, and prostitution. This crucial chapter of film history comes alive through the presentation of a wide assortment of films, carefully curated, meticulously restored in 2K and 4K from archival sources, and presented with new musical scores
Eleanor's catch ( visu )
3 editions published between 2000 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 146 libraries worldwide
Eleanor's catch is a delightful short, directed by and starring Cleo Madison. A successful actress, Madison was one of many women who directed films at Universal, particularly in the mid 1910s. In this two-reeler, she stars as a young city girl dragged into a life of crime by a ne'er-do-well suitor. A terrific surprise ending gives Eleanor and Cleo an early claim to promoting women's equality in the workforce. Rousing Melodrama

Lon Chaney : before the thousand faces : 3 rare Universal features from 1915-16 ( visu )
1 edition published in 2017 in No Linguistic Content and held by 2 libraries worldwide
"Lon Chaney's film work from the 1920s is well-known and - with the exception of the notoriously lost London After midnight (1927) - is mostly available on home video. In contrast, only 19 of the 118 films Chaney made at Universal in the 'teens survive, and only 11 are complete. For this DVD, Chaney historian Jon Mirsalis has selected rare titles that have been preserved by the Library of Congress, has reconstructed missing footage with titles based on contemporary reviews and copyright records, and created new musical scores for each. This the first time that A Mother's Atonement (1915), If My Country Should Call (1916) and The PLace Beyond the Winds (1916) have been made available in several decades, and each has been newly scanned from the only surviving archival 35mm prints." -- Container
