Memoranda of J.P. Kemble, 1788-1815 by John Philip Kemble( Book )
1 edition published in 1815 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
Kemble was an English actor who was born into a theatrical family as the eldest son of Roger Kemble, actor-manager of a touring troupe. Gradually he won for himself a high reutation as a careful and finished actor, and this, combined with the greater fame of his sister, Sarah Siddons, led to an engagement at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where he made his first appearance on September 30, 1973 as Hamlet. In 1788 he was appointed as manager of the Drury Lane theatre. After playing a huge number of parts, including a large number of Shakespearean characters, he withdrew from the management and, at the close of 1802 finally resigned connection with it. In 1803 he became manager of the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. The theatre was buned down on September 20, 1808 almost causing him financial ruin. He took his final leave of the stage on June 23, 1817
